What is Professional Liability Insurance?
Professional Liability Insurance (PLI), also known as malpractice insurance or errors and omissions insurance, ensures the public that should an adverse event occur resources will be made available. Additionally, it protects you against potential negligence claims made by the public. A PLI policy covers errors, omissions, or negligent acts, that may arise from the services you provide. Although required by the regulatory body, PLI may protect you against claims related to regulatory, civil, and criminal offenses.
You must get your own professional liability insurance (PLI) before you:
- apply for initial registration/licensure
- apply for register change
- apply for renewal
- apply for reinstatement/re-application
Your professional liability insurance policy must be compliant with the Professional Liability Policy and
- be registered in your name
- provide coverage for the entire licensing year
- be maintained at a minimum of $1,000,000 per occurrence
- include an extended reporting period of at least two (2) years
- provide coverage for Dental Hygiene Services
Where Can You Get PLI?
Many providers offer professional liability insurance, though your PLI policy must meet the parameters of the CDHS PLI Policy, it is up to you to choose who you purchase it from.

How Do I Show Proof of PLI that Meets the Requirement?
You can show that you have required professional liability insurance by uploading a copy of your insurance certificate when asked for it in your registration/ reinstatement/ renewal application form under LIABILITY INSURANCE.
Your PLI policy must provide coverage for the entire licensing period in which you are making an application.
