The Continuing Competency Program (CCP) Guidelines provide key information for registrants, including reporting periods, credit categories, eligible activities, and policies for reporting and approval of credits.
CONTINUING COMPETENCY PROGRAM GUIDELINES
What is Continuing Competency?
Continuing competency is the ongoing development of the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and judgment required to provide safe and effective dental hygiene care. Dental hygienists must remain current with clinical procedures, oral health care delivery models, and technological advances.
Requirements of the Continuing Competency Program
All registrants must complete the following within their assigned three-year reporting period:
- A minimum of fifty (50) continuing education credits
- Thirty (30) in Category A
- Balance in a combination of Category A, B, or C
- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
- Jurisprudence Education Module
- Personal Learning Tools (PLTs)
What is a Personal Learning Tool (PLT)?
A PLT is a guided resource that integrates self-reflection into the CCP. It helps registrants identify learning needs, reflect on new knowledge or skills, and recognize potential challenges or constraints in applying them.
-
A PLT should be completed for each continuing education activity.
-
Registrants must retain PLTs and only submit them if selected for audit.
The College’s Role
The College ensures the public receives safe, competent, and ethical dental hygiene care. It is responsible for maintaining a CCP that promotes high standards of practice among dental hygienists.
