The College of Dental Hygienists of Saskatchewan (CDHS) manages complaints, investigations, and hearing processes in accordance with the Dental Disciplines Act, Bylaws, and other applicable legislation and policies. A complaint alleging conduct unbecoming of a dental hygienist, incompetence, incapacity, and/or professional misconduct may come from a member of the public, an employer, another health professional, another College, or another registrant of the CDHS.
Registrants include those on the CDHS Public Directory with a registration status of Full, Conditional, or Non-practising. Complaints may be filed against a former registrant up to two years after the day in which they became a former registrant.
If you are concerned about a Registered Dental Hygienist in Saskatchewan a complaint can be filed with the CDHS.
Complaints must:
- be in writing, signed, and dated;
- contain the contact information of the complainant;
- be regarding the actions of a dental hygienist;
- identify the issue/concern of the complaint.
What Happens After a Complaint is Filed?
When a written complaint is received by the CDHS, it is reviewed by the Registrar and then referred to the Professional Conduct Committee for investigation. A copy of the complaint is provided to the dental hygienist named in the complaint at the onset of each complaint process. During the investigation, an inspector may be appointed to assist in collecting information from witnesses, records, and other documents.
A copy of the investigative report is sent to the dental hygienist, as well as to the complainant, for response. The Professional Conduct Committee then reviews both the investigative report and the responses from the complainant and the dental hygienist before making a determination.
After investigating, the Committee may decide: to take no further action; to take any action it considers appropriate in resolving the matter between complainant and registrant; to request that the registrant does not repeat the misconduct, undertakes an educational program, and/or consents to a reprimand or any other action specified by the Committee; or the Committee may direct the Registrar to issue a citation for a disciplinary hearing.
