HOW TO SELF-SUBMIT CREDITS

What is Continuing Competency?

Competence is the combined knowledge, skills, attitudes, and judgment required to provide professional services. Continuing competency requires an ongoing commitment to learning and reflection on educational needs. Dental hygienists are preventative oral health care professionals and must remain current and informed of oral health care delivery models, clinical procedures, and technological advances.

Requirements of the Continuing Competency Program

All registrants are required to complete the following in their assigned three-year reporting period:

  • A minimum of fifty (50) continuing education credits
    • Thirty (30) in Category A
    • Balance in a combination of Category A, B, or C
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Jurisprudence Education Module
  • Personal Learning Tools (PLTs)

What is a Personal Learning Tool (PLT)?

A Personal Learning Tool (PLT) is a guided resource that integrates self-reflection into the Continuing Competency Program. PLTs are intended to guide learning, identify future education needs, reflect on the information presented to them and to identify constraints in implementing the new knowledge or skills obtained.

A Personal Learning Tool (PLT) should be completed for each continuing education activity. Registrants are responsible for completing and retaining their PLTs and are only required to submit them to the College if selected for audit.

What is the College’s role with Continuing Competency?

The College’s role is to ensure the public of safe, competent, and ethical care delivered by dental hygienists. The College has a legislated responsibility to establish and maintain a continuing competency program that promotes high standards of practice among dental hygienists.
